SITE LOCATION: Malibu, California
SITE ASPECTS: 20 degree slope | Cartoonist | Reserved
PROGRAM: Art Studio
TYPE: Individual Project
SEMESTER: Spring 2019 | 2nd
FROM THE PROFESSOR:
“Students are to build an art colony studio of any kind of artist using a characteristic of themselves. The studio is to be located in Malibu, California. Building aspects include wood-beam construction, no air-conditioning, no building into the earth, and a slope of 20 degrees with the bottom part of the slope facing the ocean and the upper part facing a highway. Designs should account for mental health and basic needs of the resident as well as the sun and natural ventilation.”
I chose a funny cartoonist as the type of artist and reserved as the character trait for the tiny home. The studio contains a standing seam metal roof, insulated vinyl sliding exterior to allow thermal bridging, drywall interior walls, frosted glass door, and a mix of awning, hopper, and double hang windows with exterior louvers. The wall is to be painted a darker green to create inspiration for the artist but not detract from their work. Furntiture on the walls represent the reserved nature and the interior stairs represent the funny aspect of the cartoonists work.
